Kelly began her career facilitating more than 6,000 crisis interventions, developing a strong foundation in emotional stabilization, relational assessment, and compassionate presence during high-stress and high-conflict situations. Her professional experience includes work with individuals, couples, families, children, adolescents, and groups across a variety of clinical and psychoeducational settings. She has experience providing relationship-focused support, facilitating interpersonal process groups, and working within Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) settings serving clients navigating mood disorders, anxiety, emotional dysregulation, eating disorders, stress-related concerns, and life transitions. Kelly also has experience supporting children and families through a family systems and ecosystemic lens, with emphasis on strengthening caregiver attunement, emotional regulation, balanced limit-setting, and healthier relational patterns within the home environment. Her work emphasizes supporting both the child and caregivers in developing greater emotional safety, connection, and co-regulation within the family system. Kelly has worked across multiple treatment and community settings supporting diverse clients and populations with a wide range of clinical, relational, emotional, cultural, and spiritual needs. She works comfortably and effectively in both secular and faith-based environments, tailoring the therapeutic process to the values, goals, and needs of each client. When aligned with a client’s preferences and therapeutic goals, she is also comfortable integrating spiritually informed perspectives and Christian-based support into the therapeutic process. Kelly integrates person-centered therapy, psychodynamic concepts, family systems perspectives, ecosystemic approaches, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), interpersonal process work, and trauma-informed care. She believes meaningful change occurs through authentic connection, emotional safety, increased self-awareness, relational healing, and the development of practical coping and interpersonal skills. In addition to her clinical work, Kelly serves as an Adjunct Professor in the Graduate School of Education and Psychology at Pepperdine University, where she teaches Interpersonal Skills and Group Therapy. She is also an incoming doctoral student in Counselor Education and Supervision at North Carolina State University. Kelly works with adults, couples, families, children (9 years old and older), adolescents, and groups navigating relationship challenges, trauma-related concerns, anxiety, emotional overwhelm, communication difficulties, identity development, interpersonal conflict, and life transitions. Her approach combines insight-oriented exploration with practical skill development to support meaningful and lasting change. Services are provided under the supervision of Diana Ham, LPC-S.

She uses both her extensive experience, scholarly disciplines and biblical knowledge to bring you to the place of wholeness. "As a therapist, I found this to be an easy read and it answers lots of questions first time therapy seekers might have. This is a great resource for people who aren’t sure where to start, or just trying to navigate the maze of getting help. We all need help at some point, and this roadmap is a much-needed GPS."

"I am a black women who recognizes the need for therapy. This book is so relevant and needed. Yes black women can do therapy! Kelly R Thompson helps us to recognize “layered pain” and how we must address it. This sentence really resonates with me, “Has it ever occurred to you that mental illness does not disappear because we refuse to deal with it.” This book is so thoughtfully written and speaks to issues we can relate to. Get this book!"

"Think of this book as a myth-buster of everything you thought you knew about therapy. Ok, I know the title says “black women” but I’d recommend this book to anyone who cringes at the idea of a “shrink”. Kelly displays her expertise and knowledge in the field by providing a historical context and insights of the stigma of therapy in the Black community specifically. But I would argue that anyone can read it. additionally she provides tools and resources to assist in your self awareness. This book is a powerful starting point for those interested in taking charge of their mental well being and can serve as a ‘refresher’ for seasoned therapy attendees!!"
